Windows 8: HTML5 and JavaScript

Yes, Please!

Earlier this year, Microsoft surprised a good many people, Microsoft Developers probably more so than anyone else, by announcing that HTML5 and JavaScript would be the programming platform for Windows 8.

Well, at BUILD, Microsoft clarified that a bit.

From what we can tell, the programming platform is built on what would appear to be a cousin of COM. However, the new runtime wil be abled to be called from C/C++, .NET and IE engine (HTML/JavaScript). It will make heavy use of metadata, making it easy to surface rich statement completion and API help in Visual Studio.

This is the best we could realistically hope for. There was no way Microsoft could abandon .NET completely. We were thrilled to see Microsoft deemphasize Silverlight (although the new runtime will support it).
