Qualis needed a way for clients and vendors to place orders online instead of using the previous paper-based methodology.

We implemented an online ordering system integrated with equipment and patient data.

What challenges arose during the project?

This was a major undertaking because not only did we need to allow clients and vendors to place orders, while remaining HIPAA-Secure, we also needed to automate the billing process based on those orders.

We implemented the online ordering system using the existing Ruby on Rails application.

We used an Agile methodology to iteratively build out the components of the functionality.

Lessons

What did you learn from working on this project?

The most important lesson learned is how to manage large-scale projects that have to function perfectly. Using Agile methodologies with huge test suites, we created a flawless feature to allow for online ordering and automated billing. And it had to be flawless because we're talking about real dollars and cents, not to mention patients' lives.

The online ordering system made Qualis exponentially more efficient as they no longer had to deal with paper invoices and they could offload the ordering management onto the clients and vendors themselves.
